Description:

(1877 – 1964) Japanese admiral best remembered as the ambassador to the United States at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. It was Nomura who famously delivered Japan's declaration of war to Cordell Hull hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor had already commenced. "MY MISSION FAILED, TO MY GREAT REGRET" Fine content biographical A.L.S. "K. Nomura", 2pp. 4to., Tokyo, Jan. 31, 1952 to famous collector Cornelius Greenway. In part: "...I was naval attache at Washington 1915-1918...The late President Roosevelt, then under-secretary of navy, was a very good friend...I visited your country as the commander of training squadron in 1929 and was invited to lunch by the president Hoover who reviewed my midshipmen at White House lawn...1941 Feb. 11th I arrived Washington as Ambassador. I wanted to improve the relation between your country and mine. Mr. Cordel Hull...writes in his memoir that 'I credit Nomura with having been honestly sincere in trying to avoid war between his country and mine'...But my mission failed to my great regret. But your country and mine are going to be friends and allies by the coming peace treaty and mutual security pact...It is indeed my great pleasure...after we made many blunders and mistakes..." Light toning to the first page, else very good to fine. With transmittal envelope signed on verso "K. Nomura" and five (unrelated) unused Japanese wartime propaganda postcards.
