Description:

486. JACQUELINE KENNEDY Rare T.L.S. "Jacqueline Kennedy" as First Lady on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 28, 1963 to esteemed decorator Albert Hadley who was assisting the Kennedys in redecorating the White House. Hadley had suggested the Kennedys consider the purchase of a carved, gilt alligator once owned by the family of John Quincy Adams for display in the White House. Jackie responds, in part: "...I agree it is marvelously original but, despite its historical significance, a bit hard to place - don't you think? I'm afraid my husband thinks so, too; so, would you be kind enough to tell Mr. Colclough that we are not interested in it...". Staple hole at top else very good. Sold with a copy of Hadley's letter to Mrs. Kennedy proposing the item. At the time, Mrs. Kennedy was in the process of refurbishing and refurnishing the White House with period furniture. To avoid the politically controversial use of public money for this work, she established the White House Historical Association which would publish the first official White House guidebook (1962). All profits from the sale of the guidebook to the millions who toured the White House would be used to fund the restoration project. $800 - 1,200
