Description:

KENNEDY CALLS OUT THE NATIONAL GUARD IN MISSISSIPPI
A fine pair of printed documents (not signed), announcements made by the President on Sept. 29, 1962 authorizing the "...federalizing units of the Mississippi National Guard, Army and Air, in case they are needed to enforce the orders of the Federal Court...". Of course, these press releases were made in response to the famed James Meredith integration case, one of the seminal cases of the Civil Rights Movement. Gov. Ross Barnett and University of Mississippi officials attempted to prevent African-American student James Meredith from integrating the University of Mississippi after he won a federal court case for admittance. Kennedy and Barnett made secret arrangements for the protection of Meredith during his journey to Oxford, Mississippi, and an enormous riot broke out in protest of his acceptance. The destructive and bloody night-long riot resulted in two deaths, 175 injuries, and 212 arrests. Both documents fine.
