Lot 461
461. WALT KELLY (1913-1973) American cartoonist, creator of the comic strip, Pogo which cleverly interjected biting social and political commentary. One page of original art used for issue #7 of "Pogo Possum", published October 1951 in comic book format by Dell. Measuring 10 1/2" x 14 1/4", the 6-panel page is executed by Kelly in rich black India ink in brush and pen over his non-repro blue pencil indications. Introducing the 5-page story "150 Watts Cookin'?" in which Albert Alligator eats Owl's A-bomb, the page depicts Owl and Churchy la Femme the Turtle cooking up a recipe of "new atoms". Unsigned and unframed, the page is labeled "POGO #7 P.19" in the left margin, condition generally clean and crisp, with light handling marks towards top edge and one pasted-down word correction. Interestingly, a mailing label and postmark affixed to the mat backing board indicate the art was sent by Kelly's publisher Post-Hall Syndicate on April 15, 1952 to a Mr. William Bergin of the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy in Washington, DC...one can only wonder why! $300-400
