1064. WILHELM KEITEL (1882-1946) German field marshal and army chief of staff under Adolph Hitler, convicted of war crimes and executed at Nuremburg. Scarce T.L.S. as Chief of the German Armed Forces on official letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Berlin, Nov. 15, 1938 to the head of the Cecil Rhodes Scholarship Committee of Germany. Keitel writes a lengthy letter of recommendation for his wife's nephew, law student Wolfgang Fontaine. In part: "....[He] has a true sense of duty and favorable attitude with his comrades who see him as patient, helpful, cheerful and physically strong!.... Fontaine represents the best of the new generation of Germany and would represent the Country in a worthy way!...." File holes at left margin, else very good. $400-500
