Description:

KARL GEORG PFLEIDERER'S SUMMER DIPLOMATIC VISOR CAP
A very rare style of Third Reich headgear, a Diplomatic Officer's white summer visor cap identified to career German diplomat and politician KARL GEORG PFLEIDERER (1899-1957). The cap is finely constructed of a white wool-rayon blend with a tight diagonally-ribbed texture, and displays a large, droop-winged national eagle embroidered in metallic silver thread thread on a white felt ground at the peak. Below this appears an aluminum shell national tricolor cockade with a red wool center disk, surrounded by an oak wreath in the same metallic silver thread as the eagle above, all on a white felt ground. The sides are fitted with a band of very dark navy blue wool, and the crown and band are trimmed with braided metallic silver piping. A braided metallic silver double cord chinstrap with adjustment knots is secured over the visor with a nonmagnetic silver-finished pebble button on each side. The visor is black-finished vulkanfiber with a checked brown underside. The interior is lined with cream-colored rayon, with a celluloid diamond sweat shield containing a typed owner's label, reading: ‘Dr. Iur. Karl Georg Pfleiderer Vizekonsul im Auswartigen. Amt' [Vice-Consul in the Foreign Office]. The sweat shield also covers the maker's label ‘Erel Sonderklasse Diplomat Extra'. A dark brown faux-leather sweatband with ventilation perforations at the forehead is also fitted, gold embossed ‘Erel Stirnschutz D.R.G.M. D.R.P. angem.' The lining shows some sweat stains, with minor but appropriate wear to the sweatband and some dark marks to the underside of the visor, otherwise fine condition overall. Karl Georg Pfleiderer joined the NSDAP in October of 1935, and served as a captain in the Wehrmacht on the Eastern Front in 1941-42. He then rejoined the Foreign Office and served in China, Poland, Sweden and Berlin. He was among the wider circle of conspirators in the July 20 assassination plot against Hitler through his association with fellow diplomat Adam von Trott zu Solz, but did not take active part and escaped punishment.
