KARL GEBHARDT
(1897 - 1948) Personal physician to Himmler and president of the German Red Cross. Conducted bone and muscle experiments on prisoners at Ravensbruck. Convicted of crimes against humanity and executed. T.L.S. on his personal medical letterhead, 1p. 4to., Hohenlychen, ‘Weinachten' [‘Christmas], 1937, to Ilse [Hess], wife of Deputy Fuhrer Rudolf Hess. Gebhardt extends his best wishes to the Hess family on behalf of himself and the staff of Hohenlychen Sanatorium, the SS hospital headed by Gebhardt. He goes on to express his gratitude for Rudolf Hess's support of the programs at Hohenlychen and extends Christmas greetings. Gebhardt signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows mailing folds with a small split thereto at the top edge and file holes at the left edge, else very good. Ilsa Prohl Hess (1900-1995) introduced Hess to Hitler, who then gave his blessing to their marriage in 1927. After World War II she became a well-known author of several books regarding the Third Reich.
