Description:

(1891 - 1980) German admiral who headed the U-boat arm of the German Navy, later succeeded Hitler as Fuhrer after Hitler's suicide. Fine content A.L.S. 'Donitz' in German, 6pp. 4to., Jan. 27, 1975, responding to a series of questions. Mostly untranslated, yet notable excerpts read: '...My administrative program was simple. I wanted to end the war as soon as possible, but with the main aspect to repatriate as many German people as possible from east to west. Thus...total capitulation was out of the question...I wanted thus to come to a partial capitulation in the west with the English and Americans...Eisenhower bluntly refused a separate capitulation...We managed to gain another 48 hours until this total capitulation became evident...Mr. Ladislas Farago writes that grounds exist to believe that I helped Bormann cut across the border to Denmark in his flight from Germany. This is completely untrue...he never came to me. I concur...he had not even left Berlin in his flight but lost his life there.' Very fine condition. Sold with hand-addressed transmittal envelope.
