Description:

CARL G. JUNG (1875-1961) Swiss psychiatrist in association with Freud, a founder of analytic psychology who developed theories of the collective unconscious and archetypes. Fine content T.L.S. "C. G. Jung" 1p. 4to., Zurich, Aug. 18, 1936, in German to Lotte Menge. In part: "...With regrettable delay I am able to answer your letter of May 18. My correspondence is more like a flood than something sensible...Concerning your questions: I am very reluctant to answer people I don't know personally. Therefore, I will need to remain very general. In principle, I am always in favor that children, once they have reached a mature age, separate from their parents as soon as possible. Parents need to know that they are like trees which lose their fruit in autumn. Children don't belong to parents; additionally, they only appear to be a product of their parents. In reality, they are a product of a century-old tribe, or better still, a part of many tribes and are often as similar to their parents as an apple is to an evergreen. It is necessary to take care of aging parents, or just to keep friendly relations... [but] there cannot be any other dependencies beyond human obligation, because the young generation must start life from scratch, and can be burdened only with the most urgent things from the past...". Jung was often criticized for his lack in considering the development in children in creating his notion of the "collective unconscious ". Despite this, this fine letter well-illustrates that Jung considered children's development into adulthood within his paradigm of the mythology of an ancient tribal ancestry underlining humankind's contemporary collective thought. File holes at left margin, a few spots, and the expected folds, overall very good condition, with the original envelope, and certainly an excellent example with this fine psychological content. $750-1,000
