Description:

JOHANNES POPITZ (1884 - 1945) Prussian finance minister and a member of the German anti-Hitler Resistance. After Kristallnacht, Popitz protested the mass persecution of Jews by offering his resignation, which was refused. In the summer of 1943, Popitz conducted secret talks with Heinrich Himmler, whom he tried to convince to take part in attempts to negotiate with the West for an acceptable peace deal. Already being watched by the Gestapo, he was arrested in Berlin on July 21, 1944, the day after von Stauffenberg's unsuccessful bomb attempt on Hitler's life. On October 3, he was sentenced to death at the Volksgerichtshof by Roland Freisler. Rare signed book with a very lengthy inscription, "Stein", by Gerhard Ritter (Stuttgart: Deutsche Verlag-Anstalt), 1931. Vol. I, 542pp. 8vo., a two-volume biography of Karl vom Stein. The front flyleaf bears a near full-page inscription by Popitz in German, a presentation to the Secretary of State in the Prussian Ministry of Finance thanking him for his cooperation in administering the Prussian financial administration and congratulating him upon his 52nd birthday, signed by Popitz in Berlin and dated Sep. 26, 1935. Bookplate affixed to front pastedown, and a printed copy of the text is mounted beneath the inscription. Sold with an unsigned copy of the second volume, a bit cleaner and brighter condition and from the same owner.
