Description:

(1825-1912) Union major general who commanded cavalry in West Virginia, awarded the Medal of Honor for his gallantry at Piedmont. War-date A.L.S. on ‘Headquarters Eleventh Corps' letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Stafford, Virginia, Jan. 15, 1863, to U.S. Senator Ira Harris. In part: ‘...I can think of no Colonel in the army whose promotion to a Brig. General I would consider more preeminently just and more truly deserved than Col. Leopold von Gilsa of the De Kalb Regiment (41 N.Y. Vol.). He has been in active service ever since the commencement of the Rebellion...has exceeded my highest expectations by the manner in which he has performed his duties...He has always received the highest commendations of his superior officers...I know that you have the interest of our Army and of our Corps at heart. You can not forward it better than by using your influence for Col. von Gilsa's promotion...' Expertly inlaid. Folds, else fine. LEOPOLD VON GILSA (1824-1870) was Colonel in the Union Army and commander of the predominately German XI Corps. Von Gilsa and his men suffered a display of xenophobia after the Battle of Chancellorsville, being blamed for the misfortune of the Corps, despite von Gilsa's warning of Confederate troops nearby.
