Description:

(1820 - 1889) First Lady of the United States, second wife of President John Tyler. A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Sherwood Forest, Virginia, April 18, 1882, to Col. John Cunningham. In part: ‘...Thanks for your kind letters...How much Lachlan[?] is indebted to you – He now appreciates that I have so much longer known your deep interest in his father...action of Congress adds to my reasons of comfort and enjoyment...I think the ‘Times' was a little far-fetched in its premises and conclusions!..'that I live in New York or have ever received a penny worth of support from kind and generous friends'. Fortunately for me my inheritance was not all demolished. I have had many blessings in a legitimate way to be thankful for...Congress...presidential widows...Your letters are always much welcome to me...' Tyler lost much of her money in the financial depression from 1873-1877, but in 1881 following the assassination of President James Garfield, Congress granted a pension of $5,000 annually to the widows of presidents. She signs her full name at the conclusion. Mailing folds, else fine.
