Description:

[JUDAICA] TRANSCRIPT, ZIONIST CONGRESSES IN KARLSBAD, 1921
Scarce book: 'Stenographic Record of the Negotiations of the XII. Zionist Congresses in Karlsbad from Sep. 1-14, 1921' (Berlin: Judischer Verlag), 820pp. 8vo., worn cardboard covers with one corner cracked, spine faded, gutter cracked, pages lightly toned else very good. This appears top be the minutes or transcript of the Zionist Congress, established in 1897 by Theodor Herzl as the supreme organ of the Zionist Organization (ZO) and its legislative authority. After the First Zionist Congress in 1897, the Zionist Congress met every year until 1901, then every second year from 1903 to 1913 and 1921 to 1939. Their goal was to build an infrastructure to further the cause of Jewish settlement in Palestine. The Twelfth Zionist Congress was the first following the 1917 Balfour Declaration that declared British support for a Jewish state, and after the conclusion of World War I. In April of 1920, the League of Nations granted a British mandate over Palestine and Transjordan, making it the subject of much discussion during the Zionist Congress, which passed resolutions of support and urged ratification by the League of Nations. The 1920-1921 Arab unrest in Jerusalem and Jaffa prompted the congress to declare that Zionism sought to respect and live in harmony with the Arab people.
