Description:

JUDAH P. BENJAMIN
(1811 - 1884) Confederate Secretary of War and Secretary of State who became very unpopular for his convictions that Southern slaves should be armed to fight for the Confederacy, which of course eventually came to be. Fled to England at war's end to avoid prosecution. Very rare war-date A.L.S. on Confederate States of America War Department letternead, 1p. 4to., Richmond, Mar. 12, 1862, to Capt. Lawrence D. Lallerstedt in response to his request that his company, Co. A., 22nd Georgia Infantry, be detached from the regiment. Benjamin responds, in part: "...It is not possible for me to detach your Company from its present regiment to which it was attached by the Governor of Georgia. If however Governor Brown thinks proper to put a new Company into the Regiment in place of yours, I can make no objection to gratifying your wish...". The 22nd Infantry Regiment was formed at Big Shany, Georgia, in Sept. 1861, and first served in the Department of the Peninsula and was then assigned to Gen. A. R. Wright's and Sorrel's brigade, A.N.V. It participated in the challenging campaigns from the Seven Days' Battles to Cold Harbor, enduring hardships in the Petersburg trenches and seeing action at Appomattox and Gettysburg. Lallerstedt joined the 22nd on May 31, 1861. In just one year he fought his first battle and rose to the rank of major on June 2, 1862, seeing action at Scotts Mills, Seven Pines, Seven Days' Battles, Kings School House, Malvern Hill, Second Bull Run, Harpers Ferry and Antietam. Folds, else near fine condition.
