Description:

(1819 - 1894) Confederate major general who fought throughout the war, leading a division at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg and Spotsylvania, and conducted a threatening raid on Washington. Fine content war-date A.L.S. "J. A. Early", 1p. 4to., New Market, Nov. 4, 1864. An intriguing letter to an unidentified colonel attacking a prominent journalist, in part: "...I have received a letter from Mr. Nat Tyler of the Enquirer which is a curiosity. I have sent it to my friend, Thomas I. Deane, and wish you would call and see it. I do not know what to think of the man, whether he is more fool, coward, or liar. There is certainly a great admixture of all in him. This letter of Tyler's, was entrusted to him..." A couple of old archival repairs on verso to tiny marginal tears, tipped to another sheet, else near fine. Nathaniel Tyler was editor and part owner of the prominent Richmond Enquirer. During the fall of Richmond, the Enquirer's office was destroyed, leading the paper to suspend publication on April 1, 1865.
