Description:

(1819 - 1894) Confederate major general who fought throughout the war, leading a division at Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and Spotsylvania, and conducted a threatening raid on Washington. Vocal supporter of the 'Lost Cause' narrative in post war years. Contemporary secretarial retained copy or fair copy of an A.L.S. 'J. A. Early', 4pp. 8vo., Lynchburg, October 3, 1887, to an unknown general discussing events while serving under Stonewall Jackson. In part: '...No such thing ever occurred at any time and on any occasion did I use such a reply to General Jackson that would bear any construction approaching the language...I never in my life spoke of myself as 'Old Jube'...the nearest I ever came to swearing in any reply to General Jackson was at Fredericksburg on the 15th of December 1863, when my division having moved forward in the woods near Hamilton's Crossing to the relief of A.P. Hill's division, and after it had become engaged, Genl. Jackson's Adjt...rode up to me and said 'Genl. Jackson says advance your division', to which I replied 'By G-d, tell General Jackson my division is already engaged!' Of course I did not expect my exact language to be repeated to the General. I send you a copy....in which I give a history of Jackson's campaign against Pope in 1862...My command with a position of Lawton's brigade was surrounded there by the greater part of Pope's army and inevitably would have been captured had not Pope been of the impression that Jackson's whole force confronted him, and therefore moved with great caution...' Very fine condition. The later events described by Early took place during the Second Battle of Bull Run on August 29-30, 1862. There Confederate forces under Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson dealt a crushing defeat to the Union forces, emboldening Lee to begin his Maryland Campaign which led to the Battle of Antietam a few weeks later. Union Major General John Pope was relieved from command following Second Bull Run and he sought scapegoats to spread the blame for the defeat, most notably Fitz John Porter who was court martialed and dismissed from the army for disobedience.
