Description:

JOST METZLER
(1909 - 1975) U-boat captain and commander of the U-boats U-69 and U-847, a recipient of the Knight's Cross who sank over 55,000 tons of Allied shipping. T.L.S. 2pp. 4to., Ravenburg, Sep. 22, 1966 to an American history professor. In part: "...I was the commander of U-69...I wrote a book in 1943 concerning my experiences and then another book 'The Laughing Cow' in 1953...it is also correct that we filled-up my sub on June 29, 1941 at Las Palmas. The refilling from this tanker was only done in emergencies...I was in a difficult situation because shortly before I made the first long travel to Africa and the order was to lay mines at Lagos and Takorali...a supply at sea could not be done because the tanker for me was destroyed by the English...before Las Palmas I met a convoy from which I attacked and sunk three ships...a further chase of this convoy was impossible because I had not enough fuel and reached the harbor of Las Palmas with my last reserves...I was personally acquainted with the captain of the ship...two hours later we left the harbor undetected...the crew was not allowed ashore...". Fine.
