JOSIP BROZ TITO
(1892 - 1980) President of Yugoslavia. Tito led partisans during World War II and as head of the nation he secured independence from the Soviet Union in 1948. Fine T.L.S. in English as Marshal of Yugoslavia, 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], March 23, 1945, to Herbert H. Lehman, Director General of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration. In part: "... I was sorry both that you had not been in possibility of visiting me and that I could not discuss with you personally the UNRRA''s problems in connection with Jugoslavia. I am sure you will do your best that UNRRA''s relief to Jugoslavia be sufficient and efficascious, since our peoples have suffered in the course of the war they have conducted almost four years with unlessened fierceness against the Fascist agressors - common enemy of the United Nations [all sic]." Tito signs boldly at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows folds with file holes at the top edge, else very good. Also present is an A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], May 12, 1945, on UNRRA letterhead, an official transmits Tito''s letter and recommends that it be preserved for prosperity. Very good. Two pieces.
