Description:

JOSHUA T. OWEN
(1821 - 1887) Union general who fought in all major battles of the Army of the Potomac from Fair Oaks to Cold Harbor. Good association war-date A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., [n.p.], May 10, 1863, to Maj. Gen. DANIEL BUTTERFIELD (1831-1901). In full: ‘My officers have suffered considerable inconvenience latterly from scarcity of supplies. I have myself, together with my staff also been much curtailed in our stores. The bearer hereof Mr. Charles Gallagher is the most enterprising man I can find. None of the so-called Purveyors have been of any use to me. I respectfully request that Mr. Gallagher be allowed such facilities of transportation as will enable him to supply my whole Brigade. To this end if you will direct that all goods ordered by my officers, and approved by me may be forwarded with all dispatch, I will be responsible for the character of such supplies.' Owen signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank ‘Brig Gen Comdg'. On the second leaf of the letter, Butterfield executes two A.E.S.'s in pencil, each signed with his initials ‘D. B.', one mostly illegible but the other reading: ‘Genl [and Army of the Potomac provost marshal Marsena R.] Patrick has full powers to do all he thinks proper & right in all matters of this character'. Shows original mailing folds, with minor splits between the leaves, otherwise in very good condition.
