Joshua L. Chamberlain A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo on his monogrammed letterhead, Brunswick, Nov.1, 1880 Chamberlain writes to the trustees of an estate who have made a generous endowment to Bowdoin College. In part you were kind enough to give to Bowdoin College... the sum of E 10, 000... applied towards the founding of the chair ofmental and moral philosophy. Chamberlain mentions that a lady has also given E50,000 to fund a similar chair, and asks the trustees to consider a new department for funding: ...as the College authorities may find expedient... I make no doubt of your assent to this proposal... for the interest of the College. Signed in full at conclusion. some toning at top margin, with a lightly-soiled vertical fold, otherwise very good.
