Sniper commanding the 185th N.Y. Vols. Fine content in which Chamberlain endeavors to honor a fellow general. In part: The testimonial for Genl. Griffin (a Badge of the Ist Div. 5th Corps) has been ordered I desire to send the money today and am lacking about E 100 of the amount E1,100 to be paid In the distribution of the subscriptions the 198th was to raise E140 & the 185th E 100 I would be glad if you could make up this amount. I observe several officers of your Dept have not subscribed If you could make up E20, it would put us in motion to send the payt. today. Major General Charles Griffin 1825-1867 and Chamberlain would in a few short weeks both be instrumental in the formal surrender of Robert E. Lee's army at Appomattox. Griffin is credited with intercepting Lee's forces at Appomattox, and would be appointed a commissioner designated to institute the surrender terms. Chamberlain, of course, was selected to accept the formal surrender of part of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. An excellent association of these two distinguished commanders! Housed in a handsome, fold-out presentation binder with an image of Chamberlain. Two tiny spots in text, otherwise fine condition.
