Description:

(JOSEPHINE "JOSIE" EARP)
(ca. 1861 - 1944) American actress and professional dancer, best known as the wife of Western lawman and gambler Wyatt Earp. Josie's first romance in Tombstone was with Wyatt's arch enemy, Sheriff Johnny Behan, whom she left when she discovered his philandering ways. By 1882, she had adopted the name of "Josephine Earp", although no official record of their marriage exists, and she was on the scene following the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Although their marriage was contentious, they shared a life of mining, operating saloons, and even worked as a gambling team. Excessively rare cabinet photograph 4 1/4" x 6 1/2", a chest, up portrait of the future Mrs. Earp boasting a gold Victorian pendant and hefty diamond stickpin on her shirt. Photograph bears stamp by Tombstone photographer C. S. Fly, through whose studio Ike Clanton fled after imploring Wyatt Earp not to kill him. Lower left corner slightly bumped, not affecting image, two very light and unobtrusive stains in white background of image, else very good. Undoubtedly obtained directly from Wyatt of Josie Earp as this item emanates from the estate of John Flood, Earp's secretary, friend, confidante, and biographer. One of only three such images known, the last having sold for $6,500.
