Description:

JOSEPHINE "JOSEY" EARP
(ca. 1861 - 1944) American actress and professional dancer, best known as the wife of Western lawman and gambler Wyatt Earp. Josie's first romance in Tombstone was with Wyatt's arch enemy, Sheriff Johnny Behan, whom she left when she discovered his philandering ways. By 1882, she had adopted the name of "Josephine Earp", although no official record of their marriage exists, and she was on the scene following the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Although their marriage was contentious, they shared a life of mining, operating saloons, and even worked as a gambling team. Rare A.L.S. "Mrs. Earp" and "E", 4pp. 8vo., Vidal, Mar. 15, 1927 to the Earp's business secretary and friend, John Flood. In part: "...Mr. E. is at camp doing some assessment work...Lots of surveyors here for the L.A. water, quite a boom just now...Please call up or write to [actor William S.] Bill [Hart]....I am enclosing you all letters found, the first one Bill wrote us...Please keep them until we come to L.A....write Bill a letter. Tell him just what we thought would be good, the same as he said. Every one crazy to write his [Wyatt's] Life and yet can't do anything with it...Billy the Kid was going to be put on the screen and Burne wrote the story. Luck, but not for me. ..we'll find it...I am anxious as we have to do something about it...and it is safe will Bill...and please tear this letter up...". Folds, fine condition. William S. Hart, noted silent film cowboy, was a staunch supporter of the Earp's and went to great lengths to help them find a writer and publisher for Wyatt's autobiographer.
