JOSEPH REED
(1741 - 1785) Revolutionary statesman and soldier, signer of the Articles of Confederation, delegate to the Continental Congress, served briefly as an aide-de-camp to Washington, and played an important role in the Howe Peace Commission. Important war-date D.S. "Joseph Reed President" as president of the Supreme Executive Council, Philadelphia, Nov. 10, 1779, a statement issued by merchant Benjamin Crofts for forty candles at three pounds each "Delivered to Door Keeper". At bottom, on Nov. 19th, Reed instructs Treasurer David Rittenhouse to make the payment to Crofts. Toned, fold splits repaired on verso, still very good. These candles were used during night-time debates surrounding Reed''s election to the presidency of the council - he was elected to that post the day after this bill was submitted for payment. During Reed''s tenure as president, Pennsylvania passed a law for gradual abolition of slavery in 1780. He also advocated for the seizure of Loyalist properties and treason charges for those aligned with Great Britain, and passed a bill that resulted in the surrounding of Charles Cornwallis'' army.
