Description:

(1830-1897) Confederate cavalry brigadier general who fought at Prairie Grove, Pea Ridge; and was on numerous raids with Quantrill and Price in the Trans-Mississippi Department. Partly-printed D.S. with good Judaic association, 1p. oblong 12mo., Lexington, Jan. 31, 1859, a check drawn on The Farmers' Bank of Missouri, ordering a payment to Cary Gratz & Co. in the substantial sum of $3,000.000. Boldly signed at bottom right and in very good condition. Endorsed vertically on the face: "Accepted by Cary Gratz & Co.", probably by Gratz himself, with an additional notation on the face by a notary: "Protected for non payment..." Essentially, Gratz was protecting his stepbrother, Shelby, should the check bounce! Cary Gratz was a son of Benjamin Gratz, and Shelby was Benjamin's stepson. Rebecca Gratz (1781-1869) was the sister of Benjamin. Rebecca Gratz founded the first Hebrew Sunday school in America and co-founded other non-sectarian and Jewish charitable organizations that were among the first to be organized and administered by women.
