Description:

JOSEPH K. BARNES
(1817 - 1883) Union brigadier general and Surgeon General who was present at the deathbeds of Presidents Lincoln and Garfield. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Washington, D.C., Mar. 1, 1875, on Surgeon General's Office letterhead to Senator H. B. Anthony regarding the release by the Grant administration of information on the 1873 cholera epidemic. In part: "...Will you not try to pass the Resolution for printing the report on Asiatic Cholera - that was awarded out this morning. The material is all ready and to delay printing until next session would occasion much inconvenience and incur additional expense. I do not know of any opposition except that arising from want of time and the amount of business pressing for attention. It will be a valuable addition to our knowledge on this subject and may prove to be of great service this coming summer...". The cholera epidemic of 1873 devastated several Southern states, with numerous people fleeing their cities and at least 128 people dying from the disease. Second page mounted, very good.
