Description:

(1814-1879) Major General in the United States Army during the Civil War, best remembered for his stunning defeat by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. Early war date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., Maryland, Nov. 1, 1861, to Governor of New Hampshire Nathaniel S. Berry (1796-1894) regarding a captain under his command. In part: '...Y.A. [?] Barker of New Hampshire Volunteers informs me that you kindly tendered him the commission of Major of the 6th N.H. Vols. and that he had declined it. I hope this will cause you no disappointment, Capt. Barker is one of the best officers in my Command and is the source of great satisfaction for me to learn that he has resolved to follow the fortunes of the Regt. with which he came into the field...' Mounted. Hooker had just been appointed as brigadier general in August of that year after being rejected the first time likely due to his strained relationship with the General of the U.S. Army Winfield Scott. He would go on to lead a brigade in the Army of the Potomac, and eventually become its commander for a brief period until he was relieved following the Battle of Chancellorsville.
