JOSEPH HOOKER
(1814 - 1879) Major General in the United States Army during the Civil War, best remembered for his stunning defeat by Confederate General Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. War-date A.L.S. as major general, 1p. 8vo., Lookout Valley, Tn., Apr. 27, 1864, in full: 'I believe Miss Ella Steele will be satisfied will ever so brief a recognition of her graceful request of the 15th inst. by hetr friend Joseph Hooker Major Gen.' Some glue stains at left margin barely touching one word in text, and a mounting strip, else very good. After the defeat of the U.S. Army at the Battle of Chickamauga, President Lincoln sent General Hooker with forces to help break the Confederate siege of Chattanooga. General Grant and General George Thomas joined to help establish a new supply line. Hooker took Lookout Valley as Thomas prepared to break out of Chattanooga. Hooker then took Lookout Mountain and continued to pursue retreating Confederates. He remained headquartered in Lookout Valley until the Atlanta Campaign in May 1864.
