(1814 - 1879) Union major general who commanded the Army of the Potomac only to be defeated at the hands of Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville. Fine content war-date A.L.S. ‘Joseph Hooker Maj Genl Coming', 1p. 8vo., Ringgold Ga, Nov. 29, 1863 to Quartermaster General MONTGOMERY MEIGS [1816-1892] regarding much-needed machinery to be transported to Chattanooga — and which was not sent! In part: ‘…I have found here in some grist mills two valuable engines of about 15 horse power in running order. I will have & transport to Chattanooga all but the boilers which are too large & heavy for transportation…I shall remain here until tomorrow (30th). If you can devise some means for the transportation, please have it here prior to that time…'. On verso, MONTGOMERY MEIGS writes an A.E.S. in pencil, in full: ‘Morning of receiving [?] the order. The Engines were to be sent forthwith. Engines were not brought in…MM.' Just four days before this letter, Union forces halted the Confederate siege of Chattanooga, most notably in the storming of Lookout Mountain on November 24, and the Battle of Missionary Ridge the following day. A 1 in. fold tear at top, affecting nothing, otherwise expected mailing folds, light toning and in very good condition.
