Description:

JOSEPH HOOKER
(1814 - 1879) Union major general who commanded the Army of the Potomac in its defeat at the hands of Stonewall Jackson at Chancellorsville. E.S. "J. Hooker Brig Genl Comdy. Bat.", 1p. sm. 8vo., Camp Union, Bladensburg, Sept. 1, [18]61, specifying that "Lt. Wm. L. Candler is allowed leave of absence from camp this afternoon". Signed on verso by EDWARD A. WILD: "Edw. A. Wild Capt. Co. A. 1st Regt. Mass.", the future brigadier general and homeopathic doctor who was a captain in Company A of the 1st Massachusetts Infantry at this time, and would distinguish himself in numerous battles throughout the war, losing his left arm at the Battle of South Mountain. Hooker had been commissioned a Brigadier General USV only months earlier, and commanded Hooker's brigade in the defenses of Washington from August-October 1861. Colonel Robert Cowdin would later be appointed Brigadier General on Hooker's recommendation, and saw action at the First Battle of Bull Run, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Glendale, Malvern Hill, Chantilly, and in the Defenses of Washington. Candler had recently enlisted as a 1st Lieutenant, and would later serve as Aide-de-Camp to Hooker. Age-toned, with fold wear, otherwise in good condition. An unusually good Civil War association document.
