Description:

An official copy, 7.75 x 13 in., [n.p., n.d.], of charges brought against Private Michael Rabble of Company E, 64th Regiment for falling asleep at his post as a sentinel near Savannah, Georgia. Rabble was found by a superior laying on the ground, a blanket around him and his musket sticking up from the ground bayonet first. He was found guilty and sentenced to one-year hard labor. The verso bears the decision by JOSEPH A. MOWER (1827-1870) Union major general, wounded and captured during the Battle of Corinth but was recovered by Union soldiers the same day, that Rabble will serve his time at the Dry Tortugas Prison, signed at the conclusion with his rank. Beneath Mower's signature is the signature of JOSEPH HOLT (1807-1894) Union Judge Advocate General empowered to suspend the writ of habeas corpus, who also tried Fitz-John Porter and the Lincoln assassins, under the words ‘official copy'. Fine.
