Description:

(1730 - 1779) North Carolina Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the de facto first Secretary of the Navy. Fine content A.D.S. "Joseph Hewes" as Justice of the Peace, 1p. legal folio, Chowan Co., North Carolina, June 5, 1765. A writ, in part: "...Joseph Wharton by Alexander Elmsley hath Complained on Oath to Joseph Hewes...that Thomas Browning, late of your County, is justly indebted to him in the sum of six hundred and thirty eight Pounds...Thomas Browning hath removed himself Privately...or conceals himself that the ordinary process of Law cannot be served on him...We therefore command you, that you attach the Estate of the said Thomas Browning...so as to compel the said Thomas Browning to appear..." On the verso, the sheriff notes that he had seized "Eight barrills of Sugar & a small Cask of Rum [secured] in Mr. Heweses Celler..." Light show through in places of text on verso, a tiny hole at one fold juncture, else surprisingly good condition. Ex: Kenneth Rendell, ca. 1960-67.
