Description:

JOSEPH HEWES
(1730 - 1779) North Carolina Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the de facto first Secretary of the Navy. Manuscript D.S., 1p. 4to., Chowan Co., N.C., May 17, 1763, a note signed by Hewes, Robert Mortimore and Michael Payne in which they promise to repay the sum of "twenty four pounds Proclamation money" to "Joseph Blount, high Sheriff of ye County". The sum had apparently been used as bail for Mortimore, who had been arrested on a charge of trespass brought forth by one Benjamin Berry. First letter in Hewes' signature is very slightly brushed, else near fine.
