Fine content war-date A.E.S. on the verso of a partly-printed D.S., 1p. folio, Bermuda Hundred, Sep. 27, 1864, an inventory and inspection report for the 12th N.H. Volunteers. The report states that the national colors are no longer serviceable. In part: ‘...At the battle of Drewry's Bluff, May 16, 1864, the ferule on the top of the staff was struck by a bullet and split...at Cold Harbor, Va. The staff was shot off in two places, one of the tassels destroyed, and the colors badly torn...Petersburg, Va. Aug. 1, 1864, the spear head was shot away and the colors otherwise damaged, all...bullets shot from the enemy...'. Under the disposition section it is decided that the colors will be preserved in the archives of the state and that the inspector is: ‘unwilling to place the mark of condemnation on a standard, that has so good a record...'. Potter signs his approval on the verso. Minor teas at the mailing folds, else very good.
