Description:

Joseph E. Johnston 1807-1891) Confederate major general who led armies at Bull Run and Seven Pines. Johnston is perhaps best remembered for his stubborn defense of Atlanta and his resistance to Sherman's March to the Sea. Good content A.L. S. 1p. 8vo., Nov. 19, 1866 to Allan McLane in which Johnston tells his correspondent that he will forward his account of his removal from command. In part: l found here a letter written in reply to some questions in relation to my removal from command in Georgia... it is altogether too brief to be satisfactory, I suppose that its date would make it preferable to anything I could write now. At Atlanta, Johnston was relieved of command by Jefferson Davis for his timely, but unpopular, strategic withdrawals. Fine condition.
