Description:

JOSEPH E. BROWN
(1821 - 1894) Governor of Georgia, a lead secessionist but a staunch opponent of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, describing him as a tyrant due to his wartime policies. Good military content, lengthy A.N.S., 1p. 7.75 x 6.25 in., [n.p., n.d. but almost certainly wartime], likely a draft of a telegram, to a Capt. Robert A. Smith at Macon, likely an officer of the Georgia Militia. In full: ‘The two Companies from Macon Doyal's of Griffin and Colquitt's of Columbus for Virginia. Have asked Secretary of War to give you orders & arrange transportation. I can furnish you and Capt Hardiman rifles or muskets at Augusta. Have cartridges there for muskets, fear I have none for rifles and none here tell Capt Hardiman. Agreed with Secretary of War last might about Regiments if Lieut Altenson goes with you without Secretary's leave fear he will lose his place. Answer now about guns both need.' Brown signs boldly at the conclusion. Shows a pencil notation at bottom indicating charges for sending the message as a telegram, ragged at the top edges, soiled at the left-hand corners, and with a punch hole just off center, still in very good condition overall.
