Description:

JOSEPH CONRAD
(1857 - 1924) British novelist who drew upon his seafaring experiences in writing his classics 'Lord Jim', 'The Nigger of the Narcissus', and 'Heart of Darkness'. CONRAD ON HIS WRITING PHILOSOPHY Fine content T.L.S. with numerous holograph corrections and salutations, 1p. 4to., Kent, July 10, 1923, a philosophical response to a literary critic or writer who took issue with Conrad's work. In large part: '...I have read your friendly and interesting letter. Without referring to the book from which you quote (I refrain on purpose) I don't think there can be any difficulty in us understanding each other. What I meant to say, exactly, was that the mastery of art and also of life consists in the imaginative rendering (or view) of one's own experience (with, of course, all its mental and emotional associations); and this, if I understand your letter right, is what we both have been doing in our writing. I am afraid that you may find this answer unsatisfactory, but I assure you that whatever I may have written in the book you quote, this was all I meant to say. With my best wishes for your success in our damnable trade, Believe me very sincerely yours, J. Conrad'. One vertical fold, else fine. Conrad used his own memories as literary material so often that readers are tempted to treat his life and work as a single whole, and many of Conrad's characters are based on actual persons he had met.
