JOSEPH BONAPARTE
(1768-1844) Brother of Napoleon and King of Spain, involved in the Cadoudal plot against Napoleon in 1803, and murdered while awaiting trial in prison. Scarce A.L.S. "Joseph' with holograph integral address leaf, 1p. 4to., Philadelphia, Mar. 25, 1817 to Messrs. Leroy, Bayard & Co. in New York, a highly successful and influential New York City mercantile firm involved in international trade, banking, and significant land investment. Bonaparte notes that he has received the firm's statement showing a balance in his favor of $19,731.16. He further notes that he has met with Mr. Leroy of Chommont[?] who 'seems willing to undertake all the arrangements that are suitable to me' and asks that a letter be forwarded to him. Folds, else very good. In the period 1817–1832, Bonaparte lived primarily in the United States (where he sold the jewels he had taken from Spain). He first settled in New York City and Philadelphia, where his house became the center of activity for French emigres.
