JOSEPH BAILEY
(1825 - 1867) Union brigadier general, an engineer whose wing dam on the Red River allowed the movement of Porter's fleet, thus saving nearly 30,000 troops during the Red River Campaign. He was one of only one of fifteen officers to receive a Thanks of Congress. He held various command positions in the Western Theater from June 1864 until the war's end. After his retirement in 1865, he was elected sheriff of Vernon County, Missouri where he was shot and killed by bushwhackers. Rare war-date A.L.S. as brigadier general, 1p. 4to., 'Head Qrs. Engineer Forces', Mobile Bay, Mar. 19, 1865 to a friend. In part: '...I have a leisure moment before starting for the front...I have been stationed at Baton Rouge in command of that Dist. and of the Cavalry Division of the Dept. of the Gulf. I arrived here a few days since and am placed in command of the Engineers Brigades, Pontooneers &c. and have an army here of about 50,000 men...will move in the morning for the front...'
