(1828 - 1895) Union brigadier general who led a regiment at Second Bull Run and in the Peninsula, his troops also bore the brunt of Pickett's assault at Gettysburg. Fine association war-date A.L.S., 1p. 4to., ‘Head Quarters Carr's Brigade Sickle's Division', Oct. 18, 1862, recommending Captain WILLIAM B. TIBBITS (1837-1880). In part: ‘...I have the honor to recommend the promotion of Captain William B. Tibbits, 2nd N.Y. Volunteers...George W. Wilson resigned. Captain Tibbits is the senior, and one of the only two original captains remaining with the Regiment. He has been with it on every picket, march, and reconnaissance, and in every skirmish and battle, at Big Bethel, Fair Oaks, Glendale, Malvern Hill, Bristow, and Bull Run. At Bristow he particularly distinguished himself...His vast experience, undaunted courage, and excellent judgment well qualify him for the position...' Signed at the conclusion as brigadier general. Tibbits was appointed major on October 13, 1862. Very light toning and minor tears along the mailing folds, else fine.
