JOSEF 'SEPP' DIETRICH
(1892 - 1966) German SS General, one of Nazi Germany's most decorated soldiers. Prior to 1929 he was Hitler's chauffeur and bodyguard but received rapid promotion after his participation in the Night of the Long Knives. Commanded the 6th Panzer Army in the Battle of the Bulge. Sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for the execution of American P.O.W.s during the offensive. Scarce war-date partly-printed D.S. 1p. large 4to., ['In the Field'], Apr. 19, 1940, a 'Commitment declaration' adding a man to the ranks of the Waffen-SS. In part: '...In relation to the German Reich, represented by the Reich Minister of the Interior, who is represented by the signed SS-Fuhrer, Surholt, Wolfgang, born on 11 February 1921...makes the following declaration of commitment...I undertake to provide all services in the field of weapons for an uninterrupted period of 4 1/2 years on the basis of the laws, regulations and provisions applicable to the Waffen-SS. The day on which the signed declaration of commitment is handed over to me is considered to be the day I start work. The first three months are considered a probationary period. During this time, I can be dismissed at any time without notice or claims if, in the opinion of my superior, I am unsuitable for military service. There is no right to object to such a dismissal...'. Boldly signed by Dietrich at bottom, and twice by the applicant. File holes, else fine condition.
