Description:

(1911 - ca. 1980) Nazi "doctor" who plied his trade at Auschwitz, he was the most brutal and detestable of all the camp doctors. It was Mengele's decision as to whether camp inmates would be used as forced labor or sent directly to the gas chambers, and he as well performed hideous experiments on inmates, especially twins. After the war, Mengele fled to Argentina where he avoided capture until his death. A.Ms. (unsigned) on both sides of a lined 8vo. sheet torn from a notebook, two poems in Mengele's hand originally from a grouping of 32 journals written by Mengele while in hiding in South America, sold by us in 2011. The first poem is titled "Twilight", in full: "The blue play of the wind, Blowing through the leaves, And white clouds draw, Silent through the evening its golden destination, Like a girl’s hand, The longing touches me, And tempts to carry me off, To a faraway, dreamlike land. But with the late light, Surrounds me with sorrow, Weighs heavy on my chest, And almost breaks my heart’s strength". The second poem, "Proud Tree", is penned on the verso. In full: "You tower over bush and shrub, High above my way, But it is almost that you, Don’t care about what lies below. You are waving free in the blue air, The wind ruffles you softly, And silent clouds wafting by, The moon smiles friendly at you, The sun is glowing and dries you, When you were cold in the rain. A bird comes swiftly, and sings his song for you. Again from the power of lightning and storm, Man’s axe and cunning, Will spare you is my wish. And I am happy you exist". Very good.
