Description:

JOSEF GOEBBELS
(1897-1945) Nazi Minister of Propaganda with Hitler from the earliest days, a master of manipulation of the masses who took his life and those of his family members in the last days of the war. GOEBBELS WRITES TWO DAYS BEFORE HIS HISTORIC FIRST SPEECH WITH HITLER AT THE BURGERBRAUKELLER Fine content and association T.L.S. 2pp. legal folio, Elberfeld, April 6, 1926, on the letterhead of the NSDAP to Gauleiter Eugen Munder in Stuttgart, in which Goebbels confirms his participation in the upcoming state convention at Wurttemberg and other matters. In part: ‘...Tomorrow I am going with [Karl] Kaufmann and v. Pfeffer [Franz Pfeffer von Salomon] to Munich to speak in Munich on Thursday, to be with Hitler on Friday, visit [Otto] Strasser on Saturday in Landshut, [and] speak in Lundshut on Saturday evening. Then I will stay in Upper Bavaria for a week to recuperate and arrive in Stuttgart in the afternoon of April 17th…I hope to have the time to write you the essay you requested…You can imagine the terrible rush in which I spend my days. Even during Easter I was not left in peace…'. File holes at left, fold expertly repaired on verso, very good. By February 1926 and with the ad hoc Bamberg Conference, Goebbels was already on the rise in the Nazi party and had caught the eye of Hitler. One day after this letter, he, along with Karl Kaufmann and Pfeffer von Salomon were invited to Munich by Hitler and given a tour of the city. The meeting mentioned in this letter with Hitler, Kaufmann and von Pfeffer was pivotal for Goebbels' rise in the party: in it, Goebbels would be elevated in the eyes of Hitler from a ‘mere' hero in Russia to that of a political genius and, the following day, he would share the stage with Hitler at the Bürgerbräukeller, April 8, 1926. So inspirational was his speech that it apparently brought tears of joy to the Fuhrer's eyes. Goebbels would speak again in Stuttgart and by October, had cemented his relationship with Hitler, who would appoint him Gauleiter of Berlin on October 26, 1926. Eugen Munder (1899-1952) was an early member of the Nazi party and Gauleiter of Wurttemburg, dismissed from that role in 1928 following his vocal criticism of Hitler's lifestyle and expelled from the party. Karl Kauffman (1900 - 1965) was Nazi Gauleiter of Hamburg, a founding member of the NSDAP, and the first Nazi leader to deport German Jews, in this instance to the Lodz Ghetto in Poland. Franz Pfeffer von Salomon (1888-1968) was Gauleiter of Westphalia and S.A. Fuhrer after its re-establishment in 1925. Otto Strasser (1897-1974) was a German politician and journalist who broke with Hitler and organized the Schwarze Front. He would be exiled in 1933 and found the Free German Movement. His program had been defeated in the Bramberg Conference in February 1926, but he remained a leader of the Left within the NSDAP until he withdrew from the party in 1930.
