Description:

(1853 – 1895) Cuban national hero and an important figure in Latin American literature. Through his writings and political activity, he became a symbol for Cuba's bid for independence and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence." He also wrote about the threat of Spanish and US expansionism into Cuba. Killed in battle against Spanish troops at the Battle of Dos Ríos. Rare A.L.S. in Spanish as a delegate of the "Partido Revolucionario Cubano" ("Cuban Revolutionary Party"), 2pp. folio, New York, Feb. 17, 1892, a circular addressed to his "Compatriatas" ("Compatriots"), not fully translated by us but apparently expressing his satisfaction at the blossoming of the Cuban desire for freedom, in small part: "My joy is greater because the admirable lift of hope that God has given me to see the jubilee of hearts that will declare... the grandiose and moved agreements of the... chastened and free... man recognizes in himself in the moment of interest and honest sagacity..." He signs boldly at the conclusion in black ink. Shows appreciable toning to the edges, with original mailing folds, ragged edges, and a 1" tear to the top edge, and with the remnants of the original wax seal, else very good. Very rare from this time and on this letterhead.
