(1726 - 1787) New Hampshire brigadier general and merchant. Moulton was a captain of a ranger company in the New Hampshire militia and fought under William Pepperrell in the capture of Fortress Louisbourg from the French. In the Revolution, his 3rd New Hampshire Regiment guarded the 18-mile seacoast against invasion. In late 1777, he marched to Saratoga and the defeat of Burgoyne's army, serving in Stark's brigade during the battle. He was promoted to brigadier general by Washington. Today his name is also attached to the legend of a Faustian deal with the devil. Rare manuscript D.S., 1p. 11.5 x 14.75 in., Salisbury, Ma. (just south of Moulton's town of Hampton, NH), 1754-56, his very lengthy account with merchant Abner Clough. Most notable among the dozens of entries is 'To Rum 1/1Cap...[for] your Indian...' Very good.
