WILLIAM SAMUEL JOHNSON (1727 - 1819) Signer of the Constitution and President of Columbia College, now Columbia University. Scarce A.D.S. "Wm. Saml. Johnson " while U.S. Senator and president of Columbia College, 1p., oblong 8vo, Stratford, [Conn.], Oct. 17, 1789, a sight draft to the Treasurer of the State of Connecticut [Peter Colt], requesting: "Please to pay to Dr. Isaac Bronson of Stratford twenty pounds two shillings & five pence lawful money Balance of the Debentures due me... ". On verso is an accounting of various costs amounting to less than twenty pounds, an A.D.S. "Isaac Bronson ," acknowledging "Recd. Nov. 30th 1789 of Treasr. Colt Seventeen pounds nineteen shilling && one penny...being in full for debentures due Doct. Johnson ". Age-toned with one corner chipped. Dr. Isaac Bronson (1760-1838) rose to the rank of senior surgeon in the 2nd Regiment of Light Dragoons under the command of General George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Following the war, he abandoned medicine and began speculating in national and state securities. Age-toned with one corner chipped, archival tape repairs to verso, but overall very good. $450-550
