Description:

JOHNSON'S ISLAND AUTOGRAPH BOOK
A terrific war-date autograph book containing approx. 175 signatures of captured Confederate generals, officers, politicians, and soldiers from regiments from throughout the South, all imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio and signing for Mary S. Williams in aPRIL AND May, 1864. In addition to his name, almost every signer included his rank as well as the place and date of his capture, many also including their regiment and home town. Six generals signed the book, including Major Gen. ISAAC TRIMBLE ('I. R. Trimble of Maryland Majr Genl. P.A.C.S. Wounded & captured at Gettysburg July 3rd 1863' adding a six line poem on 'The Mission of Woman'; Brig. Gen. JAMES J. ARCHER who adds rank (KIA, also signed by his brother and aide, ROBERT H. ARCHER); Brig. Gen. ARCHIBALD C. GODWIN adding rank (KIA); Brig. Gen. WILLIAM H. F. PAYNE adding rank; Brig. Gen. JOHN R. JONES adding rank; and Brig. Gen. WILLIAM N. R. BEALL adding rank and place and date of capture. Almost every signer was an officer, and of those noting the place of their capture, 19 were taken at Gettysburg alone, with others captured at Vicksburg, Port Hudson, Lookout Mountain, Port Gibson, Murfreesboro, etc. Almost entirely unresearched and a great project for the historian/collector. Covers nearly detached with spine covering damaged, first page soiled a bit, else contents are very good.
