Description:

JOHNSON HAGOOD
(1829 - 1898) Confederate brigadier general and 80th Governor of South Carolina from 1880-82. War-date, fine association A.L.S. ‘Johnson Hagood Col. Comdg.', 2pp. 4to., ‘Head Quarters 1st Rgt. S.C.V. Near Orangeburg', June 11, 1861. Hagood writes to Gen. States Rights Gist concerning those in his command who were willing or unwilling to enter Confederate service. In part: ‘…I had the honor some days ago to report…rolls of my command showing those willing to enter Confederate service, & those unwilling to do so, the first amounting to eight skeleton companies and an aggregate of something under 500 men. At the same time, I reported the fact of having sent out recruiting officers…The recruits arrived in sufficient numbers to swell the company to an aggregate of 650 men, not including Rice's company transferred from 9th regiment in place of White's company. In the meanwhile, communications of 6th June from Executive Head Quarters were received, stating that the five regiments already sent out of the State were all that could be spared and that those known entering the Confederate service were to be assigned to local service…'. Just one day before Hagood pens this letter, the Confederates defeated Union forces, led in absentia by Butler, at the Battle of Big Bethel. Penned on blue letterhead and in fine condition.
