Lot 338
338. ANDREW JOHNSON Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, May 23, 1865, the promotion of John R. Edie to "Captain, by Brevet for faithful and meritorious services in the field...". Co-signed by Secretary of War EDWIN M. STANTON. Engrossment has lightened a bit, signatures less so, a clean fold crosses Johnson's signature, document a bit cockled otherwise quite clean and bright. Edie had a distinguished career during the Civil War. His valiant efforts averted great loss of life when the Allegheny Arsenal exploded on Sep. 17, 1862. He was then transferred to Meade's staff where he served the general for the balance of the war. Regrettably, the arsenal explosion must have weighed heavily on the young man's mind - he went insane and died in an asylum at the age of 39. $800 - 1,000
