Description:

336. ANDREW JOHNSON (1808-1875) Seventeenth President of the United States who came to office following the death of Abraham Lincoln. A squabble with Stanton along with his Reconstruction policies led to an impeachment by Congress. Extremely fine and ironic content Letter Signed "Andrew Johnson" 1p. 4to., Washington, Mar. 3, 1865, to Hon. Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War under Lincoln and Johnson. One day before becoming Lincoln's Vice President and less than two months before Lincoln's assassination, Andrew Johnson resigned as Military Governor of Tennessee, forwarding the same to Secretary of War Stanton. Johnson writes, in full, "In tendering the accompanying resignation, I beg to express my high regard for you personally, and also to thank you sincerely for the uniform kindness which you have been pleased to extend to me personally and officially during my service as an officer under the War Department". Considering the acrimony that would prevail between these two in the following years, this is a most ironic piece. Provenance: Forrest Sweet, 1953; collection of Henry Luhrs. Light creases, else very fine condition. $2,500 - 3,500
